New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton has announced his departure following 16 years as head coach.
Payton 58 became the new mayor of New Orleans in 2006, just a few months after Hurricane Katrina destroyed the city.
He was the mastermind behind a stunning turnaround, turning a struggling team in to Super Bowl champions in the 2009 season. The Saints barely missed out on this year's playoffs , despite an 8-8 record in winning seasons due to the departure of offensive lineman Drew Brees. In an emotional media conference Payton was not averse to the possibility of a coaching return. "I still have a vision for doing things in football and that might be coaching again at some point in the future, but that's not where my heart is right now," He said before being seen to be crying. The 56-year-old expressed his gratitude to Brees and said he'd discussed the issue the night before. He also expressed gratitude to the media, who have been rocky as well since the notorious Bountygate scandal, in which the player has been accused of rewarding players for injuring opponents and was suspended for the 2012 season. "When you come in as a young coach you make a lot of mistakes," he stated. "Hopefully in my latter years you have found me very open and eager to please - that's what the jelly and ice cream is for every Christmas. " It was a difficult time for the Saints. Saints were 3-13 prior to his arrival and had never played in the Super Bowl before. The Superdome, which was home to the Saints was also used as a refuge during Katrina as well as their Saints' Super Bowl victory in the years following was viewed as a way of healing the wounds of the tragedy. "Sean arrived in New Orleans during what was an extremely challenging time for our company and the entire region after the devastating hurricane Katrina. "Under Sean's direction, Sean helped lead this football team to new heights. It was perhaps its most successful season and demonstrated what can be achieved through a combination of determination, vision and the management from his coach as well as players. " With the help of star player Brees, Payton took the team to the play-offs nine occasions. Without Brees and being slowed by Covid the Saints were unable to compete this season with a weaker team heading into the final few weeks in the season. "My parents talked all the time about leaving a place better than when you got there," Payton said. "And I think we've done that. "
